Product overview
India has one of the world's largest foundry industries. Export-oriented clusters include Rajkot (Gujarat), Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Kolhapur (Maharashtra), Belagavi (Karnataka) and Howrah (West Bengal), the last known for municipal castings such as manhole covers (cluster list partly ASSUMPTION).
Foundries cast to the buyer's drawings: pump and valve bodies, machine parts, automotive and tractor components, counterweights, municipal and drainage castings, and precision investment castings. Many offer machining and painting.
Development needs patterns, sample (PPAP/first-article) approval and material certification. EU buyers now also ask about CBAM, and US buyers about Section 232 steel-derivative coverage.
HS note: Castings that are identifiable parts of machines are classified with the machine (e.g. 8413.91 pump parts, 8481.90 valve parts, 8708 auto parts). Manhole covers usually 7325.10.

Market requirements by region
European Union
EU CBAM definitive period started 1 Jan 2026: importers bringing in more than 50 t/yr of CBAM goods must be authorised declarants and buy certificates (sales from Feb 2027) for embedded emissions - expect requests for installation-level emissions data from the Indian mill/foundry. Check whether the specific CN code is in CBAM Annex I - many iron and steel lines of chapters 72/73 are; casting classification varies (ASSUMPTION per code).
United States & Canada
USA: steel, aluminium and copper articles and listed derivatives pay Section 232 tariffs (copper semis 50% since 1 Aug 2025; an April 2026 proclamation modified how the metal 232 tariffs apply) - check whether the HTS line is on the derivative list before quoting. Non-232 lines pay MFN + 10% Section 301 (as of Oct 2026).
United Kingdom
UK-India CETA has been in force since 15 Jul 2026; claim preference with a CETA proof of origin (DCTS proofs are not interchangeable).
Gulf (GCC)
Infrastructure projects buy manhole covers and gratings to EN 124; SASO/SABER conformity may apply.

Frequently asked questions
How does casting development work?
You share drawings. The foundry builds a pattern, casts samples, and you approve first-article or PPAP reports before production.
Grey iron or ductile iron?
Grey iron dampens vibration and machines well. Ductile (SG) iron is much stronger and tougher.
Do you supply machined parts?
Yes. Many partner foundries machine, paint and assemble to drawing.
Who owns the patterns?
Usually the buyer, once tooling is paid for. This is agreed in the contract.
Does CBAM apply to castings?
It depends on the CN code. Many iron and steel articles are covered, so check Annex I for your specific code.
