Product overview
India makes transformers at scale for its own grid expansion, with major clusters in Vadodara (Gujarat), Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Nashik-Pune. Many manufacturers export distribution transformers to Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and, increasingly, the US, where transformer shortages have opened opportunities. A segment export figure was not available.
Products include pole-mounted and ground-mounted oil-immersed units (ONAN, 11-33 kV primary), pad-mounted (US-style) and cast-resin dry-type transformers, with copper or aluminium windings and CRGO or amorphous cores.
Utility tenders demand type-tested designs (short-circuit withstand at labs such as CPRI or KEMA), compliance with loss limits (e.g. EU ecodesign Tier 2) and factory acceptance tests.
HS note: Liquid transformers > 650 kVA to 10,000 kVA are 8504.22; > 10,000 kVA 8504.23; dry-type by rating 8504.31-8504.34.

Market requirements by region
European Union
Transformers placed on the EU market must meet ecodesign loss limits (Reg. (EU) 548/2014 Tier 2) (ASSUMPTION - not re-checked). India lost EU GSP preferences for 2026-2028 (Implementing Reg. (EU) 2025/1909), so MFN duty applies; the EU-India FTA concluded on 27 Jan 2026 is not yet in force.
United States & Canada
US utilities face transformer shortages; designs must meet IEEE C57 and DOE efficiency rules (10 CFR 431) (ASSUMPTION). Steel-intensive equipment may be affected by Section 232 derivative rules - check HTS. US duty on Indian goods as of 22 Oct 2026 (per our compliance research, secondary legal analysis): MFN rate plus a 10% Section 301 tariff in force since 24 Jul 2026; Section 232 goods (steel, aluminium, copper, autos/parts) pay the 232 rate instead. Re-verify before quoting landed cost.
Gulf (GCC)
Saudi Arabia: regulated products need a SASO Product Certificate of Conformity plus a per-shipment Shipment Certificate issued through SABER; goods without the SCoC are refused. Utilities run their own vendor approvals.
Africa
Utility and rural-electrification tenders (often donor-funded) buy Indian transformers; Kenya: most regulated goods need a PVoC Certificate of Conformity from a KEBS-appointed inspection agency before shipment.

Frequently asked questions
Copper or aluminium windings?
Both are accepted in many tenders. Copper is more compact and efficient; aluminium is cheaper and lighter.
Do you have type-tested designs?
Partner manufacturers hold short-circuit and other type tests from accredited labs such as CPRI or KEMA for standard ratings.
Can we witness the factory tests?
Yes. Factory acceptance tests can be witnessed by you or a nominated inspector.
Are oil-filled transformers dangerous goods?
Usually not, but confirm per the oil's SDS and the carrier's rules.
Can you meet EU loss limits?
Yes, with designs built to EU ecodesign Tier 2 losses, usually with better core steel or amorphous cores.
