Product overview
India's copper products industry draws on refined copper from Gujarat (Dahej) and imports, with wire drawing, winding-wire and conductor plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Copper exports are estimated at about US$2.1 bn for April-February FY2024-25 (derived from EEPC data).
Products include 8 mm ETP wire rod, annealed bare and tinned wire, bunched and stranded conductors, enamelled winding wire for motors and transformers, flat strips, busbars and tubes.
Prices are set as LME copper plus a conversion premium. The US imposed a 50% Section 232 tariff on semi-finished copper products from August 2025, which has changed trade flows.
HS note: Wire rod over 6 mm cross-section is 7408.11; finer refined wire 7408.19; enamelled winding wire 8544.11; tubes 7411; bars/profiles 7407.

Market requirements by region
European Union
Copper is not a CBAM good; RoHS and REACH declarations are standard for electrical uses. India lost EU GSP preferences for 2026-2028 (Implementing Reg. (EU) 2025/1909), so MFN duty applies; the EU-India FTA concluded on 27 Jan 2026 is not yet in force.
United States & Canada
Since 1 Aug 2025 the US charges 50% Section 232 duty on semi-finished copper products and copper-intensive derivatives (wire, rod, tube, sheet); an April 2026 proclamation modified application - confirm the current rate per HTS.
Gulf (GCC)
Cable and switchgear makers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia buy copper rod and strips; India-UAE CEPA (in force 1 May 2022) gives preferential duty against a CEPA certificate of origin.
Southeast Asia
Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand electrical manufacturing buys winding wire and rod.

Frequently asked questions
How is copper priced?
Usually as the LME copper price (on an agreed averaging basis) plus a conversion premium per tonne.
What is ETP copper?
Electrolytic tough pitch copper, at least 99.90% Cu with a little oxygen. It is the standard conductor grade.
Can you supply enamelled wire?
Yes, round and rectangular, in thermal classes from 155 to 220 °C.
Are US tariffs a problem?
Yes for semi-finished copper. The Section 232 copper tariff is 50%, so US business usually needs a tariff-specific plan.
What documents come with each lot?
A mill test certificate (chemistry, conductivity, mechanical properties), a weight list and RoHS/REACH declarations.
