Product overview
Passive components — multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC), aluminium and tantalum electrolytic capacitors, film capacitors, thick- and thin-film chip resistors and SMD power inductors — sit on almost every PCB assembled in India. Domestic production of passives is still small, so EMS and OEM plants import the bulk of their needs, mostly from China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.
India's 'Electronic goods' import group rose from US$98.7 bn in FY2024-25 to US$116.2 bn in FY2025-26 (DGFT, tier 1), and the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) is adding new component and EMS projects. Tier-1 EMS firms buy directly from manufacturers or global franchised distributors; the opening for an importer-distributor is Tier-2/Tier-3 EMS, design houses and maintenance buyers who need smaller lots, local stock, kitting and INR billing.
Trade is by manufacturer part number (MPN) on tape-and-reel, with traceability to an authorised source. Counterfeit and re-marked parts are a known risk in broker channels, so supply should come from manufacturers or franchised distributors with certificates of conformance.
HS note: Resistors fall under 8533 and inductors/chokes under 8504.50; a mixed passives order is usually split across these headings on the Bill of Entry. Confirm the 8-digit ITC(HS) line with your customs broker.

Sourcing origins
CN
Shenzhen, Dongguan, Suzhou
Largest volume source; broad range from commodity MLCC/resistors to power inductors; mix of domestic Chinese makers and plants of Japanese/Taiwanese brands.
JP
Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka
Home base of leading MLCC and inductor makers; high-reliability and automotive (AEC-Q200) grades; usually sold via franchised distributors.
TW
Taipei, Kaohsiung, Hsinchu
Major resistor and MLCC producers; competitive pricing on general-purpose grades.
KR
Suwon, Busan
MLCC and passive production tied to Korean electronics groups; strong on high-capacitance MLCC.
Origin market notes
Southeast Asia
Several global brands run passive-component plants in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines; shipments may originate there even when bought from a Japanese or Korean brand, which affects the certificate of origin and any ASEAN-India FTA (AITIGA) preference.
East Asia
China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea supply most passives used in India. Japanese and Korean brands sell mainly through global franchised distributors with allocation during shortages; Chinese makers sell direct with shorter lead times. Lead times for commodity MLCC are typically a few weeks but stretched to months in the 2018 and 2021 shortages (ASSUMPTION based on industry history).

Trade policy note
As of 2026-11: bare passive components are 'Free' under ITC(HS) and are not, to our knowledge, covered by a BIS QCO or the CRS scheme (CRS applies to finished electronics such as adapters, LED products and batteries). Duty = BCD + SWS + IGST per the CBIC tariff; check the ICEGATE calculator for the 8-digit line and for any anti-dumping duty by origin. Sources: research/02-indian-imports.md; https://www.crsbis.in/BIS/; https://www.icegate.gov.in (status: ASSUMPTION for QCO non-coverage — confirm on the BIS list).

Frequently asked questions
Do passive components need BIS certification to be imported into India?
Bare capacitors, resistors and inductors are not, to our knowledge, on the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme list, which covers finished electronic products. Always re-check the current QCO/CRS list on bis.gov.in and crsbis.in before shipping, because coverage changes.
Which HS codes apply to passive components?
Capacitors fall under HS 8532, resistors under 8533 and inductors/chokes generally under 8504.50. Your customs broker should confirm the 8-digit ITC(HS) line for each part type.
How do I avoid counterfeit passive components?
Buy from the manufacturer or its franchised distributor, insist on a certificate of conformance and date-code traceability, and run incoming inspection on any broker-sourced lot.
What is the usual minimum order quantity?
Manufacturers ship in full reels per part number. Distributors can supply cut-tape or partial reels from stock, at a higher unit price.
Can passives be supplied as a kit against our BOM?
Yes. Kitting against a bill of materials, with consignment or vendor-managed inventory, is the usual service for Tier-2 EMS buyers in India.
