Key facts
- India imported US$53,539 million of electrical machinery: switchgear, motors, transformers, cables in FY2024-25 (static.pib.gov.in).
- Sourced from 5 origin countries: DE, JP, CN, TW, KR.
- Certifications available from the supply base: ISO 9001, CE marking, UL listing, RoHS compliance.
- Typical minimum order: From single units for spares; OEM volume pricing typically from 10–50 units per model (typical).
Product overview
Indian machine builders, panel builders and process plants use imported automation hardware: PLCs, HMIs, servo motors and drives, VFDs, safety relays and sensors. Global brands from Germany and Japan dominate specifications, with Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean brands gaining share in cost-sensitive OEM machines.
DGFT's 'Machinery, electrical & non-electrical' group grew 15.3% to US$61.7 bn in FY2025-26 (tier 1; broader than automation). Buyers include packaging, plastics, textile and machine-tool builders, system integrators, automotive plants and maintenance teams that need obsolete or hard-to-find parts quickly.
Global brands sell through authorised Indian distributors, so an independent trading house is best placed as an authorised distributor for an emerging (often Asian) brand, or as a supplier of spares and obsolete parts with traceable sourcing.
HS note: PLCs are commonly classified under 8537.10; servo motors under 8501; servo drives/VFDs under 8504.40; proximity switches 8536.50; measuring sensors under chapter 90 (9026/9031). Classify each item separately.

Origin market notes
European Union
German brands are the specification standard in many Indian plants and sell via authorised Indian distributors; independent supply is mainly spares and obsolete parts.
East Asia
Japanese brands are entrenched with machine builders; Chinese and Korean brands compete on price and are recruiting Indian distributors — the most accessible opportunity for a new house (ASSUMPTION). Lead times for standard items are typically 2–8 weeks.

Trade policy note
As of 2026-11: most automation hardware is 'Free' under ITC(HS). Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear items (IEC 60947 family, e.g. contactors, some sensors/switches) fall under the LV switchgear/controlgear QCO (research file) — check each item; PLCs and servo drives are not, to our knowledge, covered. Devices with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/cellular modules need WPC Equipment Type Approval. The machinery safety OTR was reported repealed on 14 Jan 2026 (confirm). Frequently asked questions
Do PLCs and servo drives need BIS certification for import into India?
PLCs and servo drives are not, to our knowledge, under a BIS QCO, but low-voltage switchgear and controlgear items such as contactors and some switches are. Check each part number against the current QCO list.
Do wireless-enabled automation devices need WPC approval?
Yes. Devices with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or cellular modules need Equipment Type Approval from DoT's WPC wing through the SARAL Sanchar portal before import.
How do I avoid counterfeit PLC modules?
Buy from the manufacturer's authorised channel, check serial numbers and firmware with the manufacturer, and test refurbished spares before installing them.
Which HS code applies to PLCs?
PLCs are usually classified under HS 8537.10, servo motors under 8501, drives under 8504.40 and proximity switches under 8536.50.
Can you supply discontinued automation spares?
Obsolete modules can often be sourced from surplus or refurbished stock, but traceability and functional testing are essential before supply.
