Product overview
India is one of the two largest coir producers, alongside Sri Lanka. Kerala (Alappuzha, Kollam) is the traditional centre for mats and matting, with the Alleppey Coir GI (per research, not re-verified), while Pollachi and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu dominate fibre and coco peat. One secondary source puts FY2024-25 coir exports at about US$455 mn (tier 7 - verify with the Coir Board).
Coco peat, the pith left after fibre extraction, is the fastest-growing product. Greenhouse growers and potting-mix makers buy it as compressed 5 kg blocks, grow bags and discs, washed and buffered to a low EC.
Coir mats and doormats go to home retailers, and coir geotextiles to erosion-control projects.
HS note: Coir mats and matting go under 5702.20/5705; coir yarn 5308.10; coco peat (pith) classification varies (5305 or 1404/2530 by country) - confirm with your broker.

Market requirements by region
European Union
Netherlands and Spain are big greenhouse markets for coco peat; buyers specify EC and RHP certification (ASSUMPTION). India lost EU GSP preferences for 2026-2028 (Implementing Reg. (EU) 2025/1909), so MFN duty applies; the EU-India FTA concluded on 27 Jan 2026 is not yet in force.
United States & Canada
US growers buy coco peat and grow bags; APHIS phytosanitary conditions may apply to plant-derived media. US duty on Indian goods as of 22 Oct 2026 (per our compliance research, secondary legal analysis): MFN rate plus a 10% Section 301 tariff in force since 24 Jul 2026; Section 232 goods (steel, aluminium, copper, autos/parts) pay the 232 rate instead. Re-verify before quoting landed cost.
Australia & New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand apply strict biosecurity conditions to coco peat (import permits/treatment); check BICON and MPI IHS before quoting.
East Asia
Korea, China and Japan are major coco peat buyers for horticulture.

Frequently asked questions
What does 'washed and buffered' mean?
Washing removes salts (sodium, potassium). Buffering replaces them with calcium/magnesium so the peat doesn't lock up nutrients.
What EC should I specify?
Below 0.5 mS/cm for sensitive greenhouse crops; up to 1.0 mS/cm for general potting mixes.
How much does a 5 kg block expand to?
Roughly 65-75 litres of loose substrate when hydrated (typical).
Do you supply grow bags?
Yes, with custom sizes and peat-chip mixes.
Does coco peat need a phytosanitary certificate?
Many countries require one, and some (e.g. Australia, NZ) also require import permits and treatment.
