Product overview
Leather goods exports were about US$1.3 bn in FY2024-25 (CLE), led by the USA, Germany and the UK. Kolkata (Bantala leather complex) is the main centre for bags and small leather goods. Chennai and Kanpur also have strong units, and Delhi-Noida focuses on fashion bags.
Factories work on buyers' designs for fashion brands, department stores, corporate-gifting firms and e-commerce labels. Vegetable-tanned 'hunter' leathers, buffalo leathers and goat suede are typical Indian strengths.
Metal hardware must meet nickel-release limits, and leathers need Cr VI and azo testing for EU buyers.

Market requirements by region
European Union
REACH limits Cr VI in leather (3 mg/kg) and nickel release from metal parts in prolonged skin contact. Bovine leather (4107) is in EUDR scope from 30 Dec 2026; leather goods of heading 4202 are not listed in Annex I as published (ASSUMPTION - check updates). India lost EU GSP preferences for 2026-2028 (Implementing Reg. (EU) 2025/1909), so MFN duty applies; the EU-India FTA concluded on 27 Jan 2026 is not yet in force.
United States & Canada
Largest market for Indian leather goods; California Prop 65 warnings may apply to some materials (ASSUMPTION). US duty on Indian goods as of 22 Oct 2026 (per our compliance research, secondary legal analysis): MFN rate plus a 10% Section 301 tariff in force since 24 Jul 2026; Section 232 goods (steel, aluminium, copper, autos/parts) pay the 232 rate instead. Re-verify before quoting landed cost.
United Kingdom
UK-India CETA has been in force since 15 Jul 2026; claim preference with a CETA proof of origin (DCTS proofs are not interchangeable).
Australia & New Zealand
India-Australia ECTA (in force 29 Dec 2022) gives zero duty on most tariff lines with a preferential certificate of origin.

Vegetable-tanned or chrome-tanned?
Vegetable-tanned leather uses plant tannins and develops a patina, but is stiffer. Chrome-tanned is softer, more colour-stable and cheaper.

What MOQ applies?
Usually 100-300 pieces per style and colour.
Do you use nickel-free hardware?
Yes, on request, with nickel-release tests for EU buyers.
Do you offer exotic leathers?
No. Exotic skins need CITES permits and are outside our range.
