Product overview
India is one of the world's largest pomegranate producers, with the Bhagwa (Kesar) variety dominating exports thanks to its deep red arils, glossy saffron-red skin and soft seeds. Production is concentrated in Maharashtra (Solapur, Nashik, Sangli, Ahmednagar), Karnataka (Bagalkot) and Gujarat (Kutch). Trade press reports exports of about US$ 59.76 million for April-January FY2024-25 (+21%, tier 5 - ESTIMATED partial year).
Main markets are the UAE, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, with a sea route to the USA opened recently (irradiation protocol). EU-bound fruit is registered and residue-tested through APEDA's AnarNet traceability system.
Pomegranates are graded by weight (e.g. 200-250 g, 250-300 g, 300-350 g, 350 g+), colour and surface blemish, and can be sea-freighted at about 5-7 °C for 6-8 weeks of storage life. Arils are a value-added line for food service and retail.
HS note: Ready-to-eat arils may be classified under 0811 (frozen) or 0813/2008 depending on processing.
