Product overview

India is the world's leading producer of spice oleoresins. Spices Board reports exports of spice oils and oleoresins of US$ 535.92 million in FY2024-25 - one of the largest value-added spice lines. Extraction plants are concentrated around Kochi and Aluva in Kerala, with others in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Oleoresins are solvent-extracted concentrates that carry the full flavour, pungency or colour of a spice in a standardised, microbiologically clean form. Major products are paprika and capsicum oleoresin (colour value / pungency), turmeric oleoresin and curcumin, black pepper oleoresin (piperine), ginger oleoresin, and essential oils of pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and others.

Buyers are flavour houses, meat and snack processors, colour makers and nutraceutical brands. Specifications centre on colour value (CU/ASTA), pungency (SHU / capsaicin), active content, residual solvents and pesticide residues.

HS note: Oleoresins are 3301 90; colour extracts used as colourants (e.g. paprika oleoresin) may be classified under 3203; curcumin powder under 3203 or 2914 depending on purity. Confirm per product.

Assessmentsource

United States & Canada

USA: the packing facility needs FDA Food Facility Registration, every shipment needs FDA Prior Notice, and the US importer must run FSVP supplier verification. US tariff treatment of Indian goods changed several times in 2025-26 (reciprocal tariffs, product exemptions, a Feb-2026 India-US framework and later court rulings) - verify the current duty for the HTS line before quoting landed cost. Colour additives such as paprika oleoresin and turmeric oleoresin are listed under 21 CFR 73 (exempt from certification) - confirm the use category.

East Asia

Japan and China buy paprika, capsicum and pepper oleoresins for processed foods and instant noodles.
