Product overview
India's wooden handicraft trade uses mostly plantation and orchard timber (mango, acacia, sheesham) and is centred on Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh (Saharanpur Wood Craft GI, per research), Jodhpur and Jaipur in Rajasthan, and parts of Gujarat and Karnataka.
Products include serving bowls and boards, trays, boxes, candle stands, wall panels, mirror frames, carvings and decorative objects, finished with food-safe oils, lacquer or paint. Most of the volume is design-led orders from home-decor importers and retailers.
Timber legality and traceability (US Lacey Act, EUDR from 30 Dec 2026), kiln-drying and ISPM-15 packaging are the main compliance points.
HS note: Wooden tableware and kitchenware go under 4419; frames 4414; furniture 9403. Classify by function.

Market requirements by region
European Union
Wood products of chapter 44 are in EUDR scope: EUDR applies from 30 Dec 2026 for large/medium operators (micro/small non-timber operators 30 Jun 2027); the Commission's May 2026 review confirmed no further postponement. The EU importer files a due-diligence statement with plot geolocation, so expect requests for timber/hide traceability back to origin.
United States & Canada
USA: wooden goods need a Lacey Act plant-product declaration (species and harvest country) at entry; wood packaging must be ISPM-15. US duty on Indian goods as of 22 Oct 2026 (per our compliance research, secondary legal analysis): MFN rate plus a 10% Section 301 tariff in force since 24 Jul 2026; Section 232 goods (steel, aluminium, copper, autos/parts) pay the 232 rate instead. Re-verify before quoting landed cost.
United Kingdom
UK-India CETA has been in force since 15 Jul 2026; claim preference with a CETA proof of origin (DCTS proofs are not interchangeable). The UK Timber Regulation requires importers to exercise due diligence on timber legality (ASSUMPTION).
Australia & New Zealand
Australia: wooden articles are checked for bark, insects and treatment under biosecurity rules (BICON); untreated wood may need fumigation. India-Australia ECTA (in force 29 Dec 2022) gives zero duty on most tariff lines with a preferential certificate of origin.
General guidance, not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with your customs broker or the regulator.
Trade policy note
Export of sandalwood and red sanders and their products is restricted or prohibited; Dalbergia sissoo (sheesham) was reported removed from CITES Appendix II at CoP19 (2022) - confirm on the CITES checklist before shipping (ASSUMPTION).

Frequently asked questions
Is mango wood sustainable?
Mango wood usually comes from orchard trees that no longer bear fruit, so it is widely seen as a by-product timber. Traceability documents should still be kept.
Are wooden bowls food-safe?
With a food-safe oil or approved lacquer finish, yes. Migration tests can be arranged.
How do you prevent mould in transit?
Kiln-drying to 8-12% moisture, silica gel in each pack and container desiccants.
Will EUDR apply to my wooden decor?
Wood products of chapter 44 are in scope from 30 Dec 2026, so expect to provide species and origin details.
Do you offer FSC-certified wood?
On request, from FSC chain-of-custody certified units, with limited species choice.
