Product overview
India is one of the world's largest exporters of generic (off-patent) crop protection chemicals. Agrochemical exports were about US$3.14 bn for April-December FY2024-25 (CHEMEXCIL), mainly from Gujarat (Ankleshwar, Dahej, Jhagadia, Vapi) and Maharashtra.
Trade splits into technical-grade actives (usually 90-98% purity) sold to formulators, and ready formulations (EC, SC, WP, WDG, SL, GR) sold to distributors.
A pesticide can only be sold where it is registered, and the registration holder in each country owns that. Buyers need the technical's five-batch analysis, equivalence data and GLP studies. Our role is to match registered molecules with Indian sources that hold the right data, and to manage DG shipping.
HS note: Formulations go under 3808.91 (insecticides), 3808.92 (fungicides), 3808.93 (herbicides). Technical-grade active ingredients are often classified in chapter 29 by molecule.

Grades & variants
Technical grade
For formulators; supplied in drums/bags.
Formulations (bulk)
For local packing by distributors.
Formulations (retail packs)
In the buyer's registered labels, 100 ml - 20 L.
Packaging, MOQ & container loading
| Packing | Sizes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Technical | 25-50 kg bags or fibre/HDPE drums, UN-certified where DG | — |
| Liquid | 200 L UN drums, 1,000 L IBCs | — |
| Retail | COEX/HDPE bottles 100 ml - 5 L, sachets for WP/WDG | — |
Container load (estimate): 20' GP ~14-20 MT depending on packing · 40' HC ~20-24 MT (weight-limited). Many products are DG (Class 6.1, 3 or 9); IMDG segregation and approved carriers needed

Market requirements by region
European Union
Actives must be approved under Reg. (EC) 1107/2009 and products authorised by member states; many older molecules are not approved, which limits EU trade.
United States & Canada
US sale needs EPA registration under FIFRA by the registrant; the source of technical must be listed. US duty on Indian goods as of 22 Oct 2026 (per our compliance research, secondary legal analysis): MFN rate plus a 10% Section 301 tariff in force since 24 Jul 2026; Section 232 goods (steel, aluminium, copper, autos/parts) pay the 232 rate instead. Re-verify before quoting landed cost.
Southeast Asia
Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand register generic sources; labels in local language.
Other markets
Brazil is the largest crop-protection market and registers products through MAPA/ANVISA/IBAMA - long timelines for new sources.
Africa
Registration through national pesticide boards (e.g. Kenya PCPB); generic Indian formulations are widely used.
General guidance, not legal advice. Confirm current requirements with your customs broker or the regulator.
Trade policy note
Pesticides for export need registration with the Central Insecticides Board & Registration Committee (export-only registrations exist), and some chemicals are SCOMET- or PIC-listed (ASSUMPTION - confirm per molecule with CIB&RC and DGFT Appendix 3).

Frequently asked questions
Can you sell a pesticide that isn't registered in my country?
No. It must be registered with your national authority, and the registrant controls who can supply it.
What is a five-batch analysis?
A GLP study of five production batches of a technical, showing purity and impurity levels. Regulators use it to judge equivalence.
Are agrochemicals shipped as dangerous goods?
Many are, in classes 6.1, 3 or 9, in UN-certified packaging with IMDG declarations. Some carriers restrict them.
Can you pack in my registered labels?
Yes, using your approved label artwork and pack sizes.
Which formulations are common from India?
EC, SC, WP, WDG and SL formulations of off-patent insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.
