Questions
How is import duty calculated in India?
Customs value is normally the CIF value. Basic customs duty (BCD) is charged on it, the Social Welfare Surcharge is generally 10% of the BCD, and IGST is charged on the total of CIF + BCD + SWS. Some goods carry exemptions, agricultural cess or anti-dumping duty instead — check the notification for your tariff line.
Is IGST a cost?
For a GST-registered importer, IGST paid at customs is normally available as input tax credit, so it is a cash-flow cost rather than a final cost. The calculator shows it separately.
Why does the calculator not fill in duty rates?
Rates change by notification and depend on the full tariff line and any trade agreement. Showing a rate we cannot keep current would be misleading, so you enter the rate from the official tariff.
