Product overview
India is one of the world's largest groundnut producers and exporters. APEDA reports FY2024-25 exports of US$ 795 million (746,315 t), with Indonesia (35.10%), Vietnam (13.77%), the Philippines (8.41%), Malaysia and Thailand the main destinations.
Indian kernels are of two main types: Bold (runner, large and elongated - mainly from Gujarat's Saurashtra region and Rajasthan) and Java (Spanish type, smaller and rounder, with a higher oil content and pink skin). Both are graded by count per ounce, for example Bold 38/42, 40/50, 50/60 and Java 50/60, 60/70, 70/80, 80/90.
Aflatoxin is the critical quality parameter, especially for the EU, which applies strict limits and increased controls on groundnuts from several origins. Blanched and split kernels are processed for confectionery and peanut butter.
HS note: In-shell groundnuts are 1202 41; roasted or blanched/salted peanuts may fall under 2008 11.
