Product overview
India makes absorbent cotton, gauze and bandages on a large scale from local cotton. Surgicals and medical consumables are tracked by Pharmexcil (about US$757 mn in FY2024-25, a wider group that also covers devices).
Products range from non-sterile bulk gauze rolls and cotton rolls to sterile, individually packed swabs, abdominal pads, crepe and elastic bandages and plaster-of-Paris bandages. Hospitals, distributors, tender buyers and private-label brands buy them.
These are medical devices in most markets, so the device registration and the technical file in the destination stay with the manufacturer or importer. We source to the buyer's pharmacopoeia and pack specification and arrange sterility and other test reports.
HS note: Adhesive dressings fall under 3005.10. Bulk absorbent cotton not put up for retail/medical use may be classed under 5601; confirm per pack format.

Frequently asked questions
Is gauze a medical device?
In the EU, UK, US and most other markets, yes. The importer or manufacturer handles the device registration and technical file.
Sterile or non-sterile?
Both. Sterile items are EO- or gamma-sterilised in validated pouches; non-sterile bulk is used by hospitals that sterilise in-house.
Can swabs include an X-ray detectable thread?
Yes, for theatre swabs and laparotomy sponges.
Which pharmacopoeia do you follow?
The one the buyer names. BP, IP, USP and EP specifications are common.
Do you supply first-aid kits?
We can assemble kits from Indian components to a buyer's list, subject to the registration of each component.
