Product overview
India is a major global source of cotton terry towels. Production comes from integrated mills in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab and from clusters such as Solapur (Maharashtra), Karur and Erode (Tamil Nadu), and Panipat (Haryana). Towels are reported within cotton made-ups (about US$4.6 bn in FY2024-25).
Buyers specify GSM, pile yarn (ring-spun, combed, zero-twist, low-twist), size set, border (dobby, jacquard, plain), colour (white, solids, yarn-dyed) and finish. Absorbency, shrinkage and lint are the usual quality checks.
Retail, e-commerce and hospitality buyers all source here. The hotel trade prefers white 500-650 GSM towels that survive industrial laundering.
HS note: Bathrobes of terry are 6107/6108 or 6207/6208 depending on gender and knit/woven; bath mats may fall under 5702/5705 or 6302.

Market requirements by region
European Union
EU textiles need fibre-content labelling (Reg. 1007/2011) and must meet REACH Annex XVII limits (azo amines, Cr VI, APEO). ESPR digital product passport rules for textiles are expected around 2027 and the Forced Labour Regulation from Dec 2027. India lost EU GSP preferences for 2026-2028 (Implementing Reg. (EU) 2025/1909), so MFN duty applies; the EU-India FTA concluded on 27 Jan 2026 is not yet in force.
United States & Canada
US labelling: FTC fibre content, country of origin and care labels; flammability rules (16 CFR 1610 for apparel). US duty on Indian goods as of 22 Oct 2026 (per our compliance research, secondary legal analysis): MFN rate plus a 10% Section 301 tariff in force since 24 Jul 2026; Section 232 goods (steel, aluminium, copper, autos/parts) pay the 232 rate instead. Re-verify before quoting landed cost.
United Kingdom
UK-India CETA has been in force since 15 Jul 2026; claim preference with a CETA proof of origin (DCTS proofs are not interchangeable). Textiles are among the main beneficiaries of zero-duty access under CETA.
Gulf (GCC)
Large hotel pipeline in Saudi Arabia and the UAE drives demand for white hotel towels; India-UAE CEPA (in force 1 May 2022) gives preferential duty against a CEPA certificate of origin.

Frequently asked questions
What GSM should I choose?
400-450 GSM is light and quick-drying, 500-600 GSM is the standard for retail and hotels, and 650+ GSM feels plush but dries slowly.
What is zero-twist?
Pile yarn spun with little or no twist, giving a very soft, absorbent towel. It sheds more lint at first.
Can you weave our logo in the border?
Yes, as a jacquard or dobby border, or as embroidery.
Are towels pre-washed?
Usually not. Buyers can specify a softener finish or pre-wash for retail.
How many towels fit in a 40' HC?
Roughly 9-12 MT, depending on GSM and pack compression (ESTIMATED).
